Nappies!!

NappiesNappies are of cause for babies!! So why on earth has Roy gone out and  bought lots of packs of nappies I might ask? It is not because I am pregnant ( It would have been immaculate conception if I was!!)……It is for Roy’s little baby…….yes you guessed it…….THE ENGINE!!

I forgot to mention on the way to Mercia Marina I was going through one of the locks and we had a bit of a mishap. I shouted out to Roy ” Oh my goodness” ( actually it was oh shit, but I am trying to be polite 😉  ) anyway, I shouted out…..oh dearest Roy we seem to have encountered a slight mishap!!! Ha ha…….so not what I said. Anyway, I will stop waffling, one of the locks was leaking and all the bloody water, I mean the nice flowing water, was pouring into the engine room and when we eventually stopped all the water had settled just below the engine! Ooops!! We have to keep at least one of the doors open when we are travelling not just because Roy is showing off his engine ( he will kill me for saying that, partly true though) but because it sets the smoke alarm off. In fact one day I said listen to that bird, it was a lovely beeping sound every few seconds until then I realised it was the smoke alarm going off! Yikes!!

Anyway, back to what I was talking about…….all the water just poured into the engine room and settled beneath the engine. Roy has tried to get most of it up but there is still some left and the best thing that you can use is nappies. Far cheaper than the engine pads you buy specifically for oil leaks etc. I just think it is quite funny. Last time I had to buy nappies was almost 21 years ago……….sorry Jessica if you are reading! That’s my daughter by the way, Jessica. When she finds out her Dad has being buying nappies she will definitely think he has lost the plot!

keep-calm-and-wax-on-wax-off-1Looking forward to going to see Foxglove at the weekend. Another 2 weeks and I can start waxing her! I can’t wait. I used to love waxing/polishing our last boat. I used to find it quite relaxing and also rewarding. I need to wait for the paint to harden first. Slight confession though…….I have already waxed the sliding hatch at the boatman’s cabin and the side hatches lids……..just wanted to see what it looked like, honestly! It is like a scene from Karate kid…….no not me kicking the hell out of someone one, or catching a fly between 2 chopsticks…….the wax on, wax off……wax on……wax off part!

I have to write about something during the week after all!!

Better Late than Never

I do not know where to start. So much has happened since I last blogged. We got Foxglove back after the big re-paint, no signal on the phone, couldn’t up-load videos, too knackered to blog after 12 hour cruising days, then gone back to work, stressed, tired etc etc…..you get the idea……but I have felt so guilty not having the time to blog as so many people have been watching & waiting……

So……..hoping not to disappoint, lets back track a bit to those magical few days when we went to get Foxglove back……….

Tuesday, 28th May- The Big Reveal:

foxglove 062 foxglove 073 Arrived at the marina really early to catch all the action. Foxglove was still undercover ready to be revealed…….She did not disappoint. The work that Sally Tooze has done was absolutely stunning!! Everywhere foxglove 066I looked there was just new things to see. All I think I was saying was Wow, oh my goodness it is so nice, Wow, amazing……you get the idea. Sally was still busy putting things back on Foxglove and Rob Shone (the joiner) was there putting some final touches on for us also. Everyone was still working hard to make sure everything was on, fitted, shining, and ready to go! We had to wait for the tractor to come and pull Foxglove out so we took the opportunity to go get a bite to eat and drink in the cafe there while we waited.

FamilyMet a lovely family there who I promised to say hello to………Hi Edward, Wendy, Thomas & Lucy off Narrowboat Katharine. We told them all about the blog so I hope you have got the chance to finally see your picture on here. Hope to meet you again one day on the canals.

We then saw the tractor arrive around 1 pm…….OMG as they say…….this was finally the moment we had been waiting for. All those months after buying Foxglove and  then the last 4 weeks of having her painted, all came down to this moment. It was everything and more than I expected.

Cue the video!!!!

Foxglove looks amazing. Huge thanks to Sally for everything she has done.

We statyed at Overwater marina on the Tuesday night as it was torrential rain for the rest of the day so we took the opportunity to get settled and put all the food shopping away, have a quick clean up and plenty of rest for the next few days ahead as we needed to get to Mercia Marina by Sunday.

Wednesday 29th May- The day of the Locks

On Our wayWhat a way to start your journey in a newly painted boat than to go through the Audlem flight (15 locks) and then carry on through another 10 locks for the rest of the day. Roy was the first to drive her out of the marina…….careful not to bump her, everyone was watching which puts you under even more pressure. We waved goodbye to everyone at the marina and off we set………..only 25 locks to do and it was my turn to drive ( cruise, whatever the terminology you like to use). I must have had a look of horror on my face coming up to the first lock…….stress…….oh my goodness…….that was an understatement………..people were saying what a lovely looking boat and trying to talk to me……..I was thinking in my head………..please just let me concentrate and let me get this through the lock in 1 piece and all paint still in tack ( that was the polite version of what I was thinking). Anyway, all was good……First lock done, another 24 to go. After lock 3 I had calmed down a little bit……I think my face might have looked a little more relaxed.

FoxgloveTo cut a 9 hour story short we moored up at Knighton late on in the evening, all 25 locks done and with relief that the boat was o.k (teeny weeny little scrape on the blacking, that was all……I was surprised Roy didn’t get his paint brush out that evening!) It had rained in the afternoon on that day and I have to say Foxglove looked stunning with the water droplets settled on her. She really does look fabulous.

Thursday 30th May- Ache, ache ,ache

Oh my goodness did I ache on that day. I think it was from being so tense going through all those locks. We were up though bright and early and left our mooring by 8am as we knew we had a long day ahead of us. We were on a mission to get by Mercia by Sunday.

SunThe sun came out and so did other narrowboaters. The canals were starting to get busy but it was a lovely day and so we made the most of it and travelled until 7.30pm that night. We went through Norbury, Gnosall (saw our very first boat again, Clare-Louise) and then moored up at Gailey. I think we were in bed by 9pm as we were exhausted. Each night we looked at the map to see if we were still going to make it or not…….so far so good!

Friday 31st May – The day of disasters

I wont bore you too much with all the things that happened on that day but they always say disaters come in threes

  • 1. Wish missed the boat as she went to jump on and ended up in the canal. She is fine though, Roy went and bathed her immediately…….this is when the next disaster happened.
  • 2. Sun burnt. I have never got so sunburnt so quickly in all my life. Whilst Roy was bathing Wish I was driving the boat and my tiller arm, as I like to call it, got abosultely burnt within an hour and a half. It was so hot that night you could feel it burning through my nightie. I looked like a lobster.
  • 3. Muck for luck- well not quite. Roy stood in dog poop!! Absolutely disgusting. Banned from stepping on the boat with them on he left his shoes on the back of the boat overnight only to knock them in the cut the following day!

The day did ended though really well with us moored up at Rugeley, at the aqueduct over the River Trent. Friends Janet & Angus came and surprised us with a bottle of wine and some beers. They stayed until 10.30 that night…….really goodnight…….lots of laughs as always. Love you two!!

Saturday 1st June – The day I had dreaded.

Woke up exhausted today and all I wanted to do was to sleep and knowing where we had to go today didn’t put me in the best of moods……..we were heading for Fradley Junction, on a Saturday, Bank Holiday week, half term……..Oh my goodness I could see this being a nightmare. I was trying to put it off but knew that I couldn’t…….I just had this vision of it being so busy at the junction stuck in between the locks, being thrown everywhere, scratching the boat……etc etc……do you get what I mean?

Shine

There were 5 locks at Fradley to get through…… just as I had thought it was so busy……we were boat number 5 to go through the first lock. This was the first time we had to cue at a lock over the last few days……….Didn’t they knew we were on a mission and we had to get to Mercia the following day………I thought we would be forever at Fradley but luck was on our side today. Went though the first lock and then everyone in front of us decided to moor up and we went through the next 4 locks like a breeze. Every lock we went to was being manned by CRT and a boat was coming out at each one so I managed to time it just nicely to go straight in.

What a relief! It was a good job as well because I had never seen Fradley Junction so busy with people. Foxglove was photographed so much on this day I found it unbeleiveable. She was the talk of the towpath on that day. Sally if you are reading, you must feel so proud of yourself as everyone could not believe it had been done by hand and they thought it was fantastic. I am sure Sally will be getting lots of phone calls as quite a lot of people took her details.

Even one of the CRT volunteers had his camera on him and he actually stood at the back of Foxglove to have his photo taken on her. He said we had made his week. Him saying that had made my day! The CRT people on that day were very helpful and made my day very easy. Thank you to you all.

We moored up that night just after Branston Lock. 1 more lock to do tomorrow and only a few hours to go. I was getting excited.

Sunday 2nd June- Final day of travelling.

Managed to get a bit of a lie in this morning which was well needed. We knew we could take it easier today as we only had about 3 hours to do and 1 lock. Hooray!!

The sun was still out which was great. After the last lock was done I went inside the boat to have a bit of tidy around as we had none stopped travelled since Wednesday. Not long after I had been inside I heard Roy give a little wah wah on the klaxon……well it wasn’t quite a wah wah noise but that’s the closest word I could think of, I think you get the general idea. Anyway, I popped my head out through the side hatch and could not believe what I saw……..

No-one would have believed me unless I had taken this video…….

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHj9HEFYgd0

Anyway, the little pigeon stayed with us for at least half an hour before I lifted him off to fly away. It was a homing pigeon as it had rings around both feet. That was why it was tame and friendly………and it never pooped all over Roy!

At 1.30pm we could see the marina……….hooray……we had finally made it.

Off we went around the marina to find our new home. Greeted by our new neighbours Ann & Terry who are lovely , we were made very welcome.

It was such a relief to finally arrive. Guess what was the first thing we did?

come on you guys….think………..think really hard………

Only those who know me really well would know what I did……..

You guessed it………

We washed the boat off ! I had really looked forward to this moment. I know some of you may think this a little sad but I actually don’t. It was lovely to wash her off knowing that it made a differencee. Before she was painted it wasn’t even worth washing because it didn’t look any better but now………WOW………the shine……..the smoothness………Its like an advert for shampoo!! I was in my element.

Because You Worth It!Washed off all bird poop off the roof and all the dust and dirt it had collected over the last few days. 81 miles 55 locks, all washed off and she looks absolutely amazing!!

The next thing we did was well deserved……..coffee and cake in the Willow Tea Room at Mercia Marina followed by an afternoon nap in the boatman’s cabin!

Perfect end to a perfect few days!

Well that’s it folks………that was our few days we had to get Foxglove back to her new home. We seemed to have lost a passenger though along the way……..

Do you know who I am talking about?

New Car

Anyway later on that week at work I was sent a picture from my friend, Davide, in Italy who has just had a new car. He said he had a unexpected visitor!!

This made me laugh so much.

Looking forward to many happy days on Foxglove. Thank you all for all your support and comments over the last few months.

Stunning!!

foxglove 062foxglove 066Firstly, big apologies to everyone who was waiting for the big reveal. Of all the occasions not to have a signal for the Internet why did it have to be last night?

foxglove 073

There are so many photos and videos we have taken of Foxglove I could be blogging for hours so here are just a few, she really does look amazing.

Big thank you to all the people who have worked on her:

Sally Tooze  http://www.willowboats.co.uk/
Martyn King http://www.vimartsigns.co.uk/

We have lots of travelling to do now so we can reach Mercia Marina for Sunday so I will fully update the website on my return including all the people we met at Overwater.

25 locks done today and all paint still intact…. never been so scared going through a lock in all my life because of the new paintwork.

Looking forward to seeing the video. Lots to show and lots to say!

Will be back in a few days…. Keep watching !!

12 hours to go….

The big day has nearly arrived. Less than 12 hours to go and we get to see the final result. Early start in the morning so we can be there for when she is put back in the water. Excited and nervous. Thank you everyone for the wonderful comments, texts and emails we have received so far.

Extra help!

Well there has been lots going on today at the Marina to get Foxglove finished off.

IMG-20130526-000841

Rob the joiner has had a helping hand from someone special called Sergei……..apparently he went missing though………He thinks Tigger and Sergei have been up to no good in the boat??

Apparently we have now got some scallops painted on the boat which is something new for Foxglove. There are quite a few subtle changes we have made. Can anyone spot them? I know friends Jan & Angus have noticed one new change.

Just one more  day and 2 nights sleep before the big reveal and the journey back to its new home will begin. How excited am I? Unbelievably excited!!

There is lots to do tomorrow in preparation to collect Foxglove on Tuesday morning, food shopping being one of them. I love cooking when I am on the boat so I always end up buying lots of food for all the recipes I want to try out.

I really hope the weather is going to be as gorgeous as it has been today but everyone keeps warning us we are going to have lots of rain! I hope not. Every time we have been out on Foxglove we have always had lovely weather. I really hope it continues especially because we will be on a tight schedule to get Foxglove back to its new home.

We met the new neighbours today at Mercia marina. Frank & Sherrie and Ann & Terry. Hi guys if you are reading. Glad their names rhymed because I have tried to remember their names all the way back home. It was gorgeous down at the marina today. I can’t wait to moor there. Everyone seemed really friendly and welcoming. We were even given a bottle of wine by the marina as a welcome present which I thought was very nice of them.

I cannot believe the time has almost come when Foxglove will be finished. I think we will find she has been bought back to her true beauty with the thanks of Sally, Martyn & Alex and her team and also with the joinery skills of Rob Shone.

Thanks to all of you. See you Tuesday!!

WWW.

Those three W’s are not the beginning of a website they were the first three words that came out of my mouth today when I saw Foxglove……

WOW, WOW, WOW !She is looking fantastic.

Everyone was so busy getting the finishing touches completed on Foxglove.

3photo 2photo

It was fascinating to watch everything being done and we were let into a special treat by actually watching Martyn the signwriter at work.

tiger

He also had a little surprise for me………….

He has painted it inside the window peaking out. What a lovely thought and it also makes the boat more personal to us.
Sally was busy pulling all the masking tape away………..she let me have a go………..only did about 3 inches then had to stop……….Far too much responsibility. The last time I pulled masking tape off it pulled half the paint off from underneath……..I was not risking that today on Foxglove.

Rob the joiner was also there. He has finished all the back opening to Foxglove and he has done a fab job. He has also had to make a new opening hatch for her which is just about to have its final coat of paint on it with the only heart we are having on the boat. Don’t forget Martyn!!

IMG_0433So much was going on and everyone was so busy I could not believe that we were there for around 2 hours. It was just so fascinating to watch!

Lots of hugs before we said goodbye as this will be the last visit over now before we collect Foxglove on Tuesday.

No more work now so we can just concentrate on enjoying the boat.

Lets hope the weather stays like it has been today………..it has been beautiful, sunny and quite warm and it certainly lifts your spirits.

Get ready for the big reveal on Tuesday!!

The excitement is building!

IMG-20130523-000791OMG!!! as some might say. Had a text out of the blue today from Rob Shone , the joiner and I was like a big kid………..jumping up and down with excitement……….

He sent photos of Foxglove………..IMG-20130523-000821

The whole team is working away very hard to get Foxglove finished for Tuesday.

It is literally all hands on deck!

Lots of masking tape protecting the rest of the paint work but you can catch glimpses of what has been done.

I can see the hand rails (bright red, gorgeous colour), the harlequin pattern on the roof (WOW, amazing), part of the bow colours ( Gosh it is so neat)……What else can I see…….Tigger??

IIMG-20130523-000801 wonder why they have taken this part of brown paper away?? Do you know why??

Perhaps something is going to be painted there? Who knows? I do 🙂

Gosh it is soooooooooooo exciting!!!

Think I am going to need that box of tissues on Saturday as it is going to be a very emotional day.

How many times can you say “I am so excited”…

I am so excited……

So excited………..

SoooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOoooooOOOOOoooooo EXCITED!!!!

Give me a sign

What kind of sign you might wonder, well the sign I have got is the one going on Foxglove. Now nicknamed Foxy ( thanks Mark for the name)!

Martyn (Vimart Signs) has started the signwriting today. I am absolutely bursting with excitement to see it because this is where a big change is going to happen……..can’t tell you yet as it is a surprise…….. Be a surprise for me also as I know what is going to be written on the boat but in what style writing I do not know. I am putting my complete faith in Martyn.

We won’t be able to see Foxy until Saturday. The suspense is killing me! We have been told though it looks fantastic so far. This is the week when all the final colours go on the boat, the diamonds, the hearts, the scallops, who knows perhaps a little Tigger!

People have asked me what is the joke about Tigger……my answer is that you will have to read all the blog!

Rob Shone has also been busy finishing off the final joinery on Foxy. Everyone is working together so hard to get it all finished in time for Tuesday 28th when she will go back into the water! Not long to go now.

I wonder what surprises there will be?

The Black Knight

AlexWell this young gentleman certainly is my Knight in shining armour…… Meet Alex.

He has done a lot of the painting on Foxglove and we are yet to meet him. First thing I would say to him is …. WOW!!! His paintwork is like a mirror, super smooth, incredibly shiny and just WOW!
Alex has been busy painting the black this week and yesterday when we were over I took this photo……..

shineThe paintwork was so shiny and reflective all you could see was your reflection. You can even see the light and the roof beams reflecting onto the paintwork because it was so shiny. Thank you Alex it looks fantastic!!

Seeing RedIMG_0397Sally let us have a little sneaky peak under the brown paper to see the portholes and also to see the final red colour that we had chosen…… It was another WOW!!
It was very emotional. I was so thrilled with the colours and the quality of the paintwork I got a little emotional although Roy might say embarrassing…. Yes you guessed it….. I started to cry. It really looks fantastic!

Final week this week and I best get the tissues for next week, ( thanks for warning me Jo… NB Hadar)

5 days of work to go for me then I have a week off. Its going to be an exciting week.  Keep watching for the big reveal!!

Brown paper packages tied up with string??

Yes, another musical song title for my blog tonight. Perhaps with string is slightly incorrect but it will certainly been a brown paper package, but perhaps stuck down with masking tape.

This is all we will be able to see this weekend when we visit Foxglove as most of the sides will be covered with brown paper ready for the coach line and signwriting to be done, so the rest of the boat will be protected whilst this is being done.

I really want to get over to the marina at the moment to see the finished colour of the sides of the boat but unfortunately I am at work during the day so I can’t get over there.

brassed off2013-05-14 14.55.59Sally has been polishing all the brass fitments on the boat and lacquered them for protection. She spent all day polishing them yesterday and she kindly sent us an e-mail with the photos attached with a heading “Brassed Off.” I think it is great she has kept in touch with the progress. Apparently they are going to be fitted back on tomorrow. I bet it is going to look stunning, the shiny brass against the dark shiny red! It really is hard keeping away as I am really excited to see it. 12 whole days left to go and she will be revealed. Then we have the big move! 25 locks in the first day or so OMG………….I just hope the paintwork stays exactly where it is. I am dreading  the trip back as I do not want to scratch it, bump it, collide with a bridge………you name it I just want to get it back safely.

Sally is going to be sending a photo tonight of the outside of the boat so I can have a quick look before the brown paper goes on…………..I think I have already checked my e-mail at least 10 times tonight………….I am so impatient! But very excited!!!!
