Just the job!

Trip to John Lewis today and I was amazed at this little item that I found. It is called an i-plunger. It is basically a little plunger that sticks to the back of an i-phone so you can then prop the i-phone up……..useless and waste of money I thought………

I put it against a mug so you could see how tiny it is:

i-plunger

i-plunger

Anyway, useless as it may be for an i-phone it was “just the job” for what I needed. In the mornings after the windows have been closed all night I can’t get some of the porthole windows to open as they are stuck against the seal of the frame in a kind of vacuum and I have to try to prise them open. I even used the edge of a fork to lift them, but also nearly broke the glass doing so………anyway I said to Roy I could do with something that sort of sticks on the window like a suction cup and pulls it away from the frame……….

So as useless as I think it is for an i-phone and think it ought to be re-named as the narrowboat port-hole plunger!!! What do you think?

Caution though: NOT TO BE USED IN TOILETS!!!

Having the snip??

Bet you all thought I mean Roy has gone and had the “snip”……..Not bloody likely would be his answer!! What I mean by the snip is that I have gone back to good old Staffordshire today to get my hair cut. It has been 6 months since I have been and had it cut.

Joseph DeStefano

Joseph DeStefano

A 45 minute trip to Joseph DeStefano (Hairdressers) in Newcastle-under-Lyme, well worth the trip. They have been my hairdresser for the past 18 years and I would never go anywhere else. Jacqui, the girl on the left in the photo……”Hi Jacqui” if you are reading…….I trust completely. I just let her do whatever she thinks needs to be done. I had a relaxing time in there today, 2 cappuccinos and a good natter and 1 fabulous hair cut and then back home. Anyone thinking of getting a new hairdresser, this is the place to go!! I did not shut up about narrowboat life………sorry all if I bored you too much. I am just enjoying life so much at the moment, better than it has been for a long, long time.

I had friends, Nancy & Roger over for most of the day yesterday and we went for a fabulous walk along the canal…….straight to the pub! I was very good though as I only had a tonic water…….honestly I did. Wish was completely shattered when we got back as Roger was throwing her a stick all the way there and all the way back. I could not believe how hot it was yesterday, today however, the weather has started to get a bit cooler. Will this snow that was forecasted for October really be on its way sooner than we think? Who knows.

I was also reminded today that it is exactly 11 weeks until Christmas. There are already Christmas goods for sale in the shops.Unbelievable!! There is Halloween before then and bonfire night……..oooohhh that reminds me I must get a pumpkin to carve out. We are going to decorate the boat and get in the “spirit” of things…….get that…”spirit”….halloween…….oh never mind.

Roy has had man flu……….I am not saying anymore…….I am sure all you women out there sympathise with me!! Nurse Clare though has been on duty though ( that’s me by the way) 🙂 I hope it is reciprocated when I catch it.

Apparently it is going to be windy this weekend…….hope not as we are planning to get out on the boat. Last time we went out it was a little windy when I came back in the marina to our mooring spot…….put it this way, if the neighbours were asleep, I soon woke them up with a bump!! It was Roy driving……..not me!!! Ha ha Roy. Actually I cannot tell a lie it was me. Little embarrassing but never mind 🙂

Success :-)

Well the chicken went down a treat and the sauce was fantastic. Roy even said that it was the nicest meal I had cooked in the 22 years we had been married. Not sure if that was a compliment or not??? Let you work that one out 😉 I will definitely be cooking that meal again though!

I am planning on making some “drop scones” this weekend which I know as “Scotch Pancakes”. The recipe says it makes 30!! I think I might make the whole lot and share them out between the neighbours, only if they are a success.

Well it is exactly 1 year today since we were handed the keys to Foxglove. I remember trying to open to door to start the big clean up wondering where on earth do we start…………oh and the spiders!! That was the first thing to conquer. 1 year on and the boat looks fantastic and I even don’t mind spiders too much anymore as long as they don’t invade my space. I even find some quite interesting to look at and Roy & I even say sometimes ” go on, I dare you, pick it up.” Never thought we would be doing that.

Got a bit of sorting out back at the house today to prepare for the new owners to take over. A skip has been ordered for some items………well a lot actually, boxes for charity, boxes for storage, that’s as far as we have got. I have been avoiding it really, but with only a few days to go it has to be done. Luckily the new owners are keeping quite a lot of the furniture which is great for us and for them. I have been living on the boat now for 5 weeks and not needed anything that I have left behind at home so everything is going. I was looking this morning around the house thinking OMG all the windows that need cleaning, the light fittings that need dusting, all these extra rooms and possessions that need cleaning. I think I have wasted so many hours of my life cleaning and taking care of the house that I got lost somewhere. It s like the house controls you and there is no time for anything else but now things are different. It is so nice having the time to yourself again, doing the things that I want to do rather than “having to” do certain things.

I am planning on getting a keyboard for on the boat so I can start my song writing again. This is something that I haven’t done for a few years now. I am really looking forward to that.

Well I best get a move on and start sorting out……..oh and then a trip to the garden centre to get some plants for the boat. Sorry Roy, it has to be done! Can’t manage a trip back to Stoke-on-Trent without visiting Trentham Gardens……….Roy’s favourite place ( NOT!)

Master chef.

chefI am getting quite a chef……well kind of……attempted a few recipes which have turned out rather good even if I say so myself.

Cooked a bolognaise the other night which had white wine in it and milk!!! Very strange combination I thought as when I have made up bolognaise in the past , and I mean literally “made it up” as I go along, I have always used red wine. Anyway, this particular recipe had bay leaves in and all kinds of ingredients and it was absolutely yummy! Roy ate it so it must have been good 😉

So great to have the time to make proper meals from scratch. I am going to try out my own carbonara sauce over the next few days and I am also going to cook a roast chicken which has bay leaves and lemon stuck under its arm pits later on today, cooked in white wine……lucky chicken. Shoving a chicken in the oven is normally as far as it gets but learning to do all the extras like the lemon, bay leaves ,wine etc make it far more interesting. I will let you know later if it works out o.k. Apparently the juices from the chicken and wine are supposed to make a nice sauce if I add double cream to it. Lets hope!!  If not there will always be the left over wine to have!

Still not lit the fire yet on the boat. I have set the central heating to 18 degrees and it has only come on on the odd occasion at night-time. The boat is very well insulated which I am very pleased about especially as I have heard we are going to get snow in October. Really?? I will wait to see it with my own eyes before I make any comments.

All jobs done on the boat today so dog walking, then shopping then the famous roast chicken to cook later are on the agenda for today.

I am definitely going to start blogging more as the wi-fi is more reliable now and Roy has also just paid for another 12 months to keep the domain ” foxglovenarrowboat.com” so I best make the most of it. The domain name is about to expire and you know what that means don’t you…….that it is a year since I started this blog. It will actually be 1 year tomorrow since the surveyor came and looked at Foxglove and we then made the brave decision to buy her. What a year it has been. I have no regrets and I am so glad that we pursued the dream.

So many people we have spoken to who live on their boats would never go back to a house.  There is so much stuff I have left behind at the house which just goes to show that I do not need it. Life is much simpler and you actually have time for yourself again and enjoy what is around you. There is so much we all take for granted because we are always rushing around. I am so glad we found Foxglove.

She really is now home 🙂

Home Sweet home

My Best -Friends’ Wedding

I know that is a title of a movie and that is exactly what it was like. Over to Italy……..

883131_534223403314858_1494848780_oMy best friend Davide finally tied the knot to Claudia on Friday 27th Sept. They looked like 2 movie stars! Davide, handsome as always, looked very dashing in his suit and Claudia looked the complete princess. Her dress was absolutely beautiful, elegant and she really did look like a movie star.

The photos say it all.

It’s been a while…

People say ” time goes quickly when you are having fun”. Well it certainly has and it has been just over a couple of weeks since I have written. I don’t know how on earth I found the time before to go to work because each day has just been filled to the max.

I actually enjoy getting up each morning, relaxed breakfast at the table, no rushing around. Wish (the dog) is also enjoying her new life as she is walked so much each day and fussed by so many people.

Plans have changed slightly with the house now as 2 couples put an offer in on the house on the same day so we are no longer going to rent the house out as we have accepted the offer from a lovely couple who are in a position to move straight away. Fingers crossed we shall have completed the house sale within the next few weeks.

The boat finally got a complete waxing last Friday & Saturday and it looks fantastic. It should be ok to see us through the Winter, I think it might take that long recover from all that “wax on, wax off”. I thought I was in a scene from the Karate Kid! You will have to watch the film to understand that 😉

This afternoon has been glorious, the sun was shining and I sat out at the front of the boat having a coffee with my friend & neighbour Ann. At least we were on coffee today!! The marina is starting to fill back up again as people are coming back after spending months out on the canals. Used to wish that would be me one day and now I can. A long holiday is on the horizon. As soon as the house is sold that will give us more freedom.

Did anyone watch The Golden Age of canals on Tv the other night? Well at the end of the program it showed you working narrowboat Hadar which is also a Roger Fuller boat. It was built by a Roger Fuller just after he finished Foxglove. We met the owners a couple of times and we also follow their blog. It was really good to see Jo & Keith on their boat Hadar on TV. Told you they were celebrities!

More photos will come as soon as we have sorted out a better internet signal. I have taken lots during the past few weeks but unfortunately they just take too long to upload or won’t upload due to the signal.

There have been fabulous sunsets…….not sure about the sunrises as I am not up that early but there has been some amazing photos and views. It is surprising how the weather has changed so much as it went quite cold the other night that it was like a view of smoke signals in the marina as some people have put their coal fires on……it is quite a peaceful scene at the marina when you see this. Yesterday was foggy and grey all day and the water was as still as stone if that’s a saying…….it was just very still! Today has been glorious sunshine.

1 month tomorrow since I left work and it was the best thing I ever did! I should have done it a long time ago but at least it paid for the new paint job on Foxglove. Retired at 41! They say life begins at 40….. It certainly does!! 🙂

Entertaining Weekend

This weekend has been fab. The marina held their 5th open weekend.

IMG_0925

Plenty of stalls with canal memorabilia, food, drink and entertainment. Enjoyed a lunch from the hog roast. Huge sandwich of pork, stuffing and apple sauce. It was yummy! Bought 2 cupcakes also that Roy & I devoured later that afternoon. Bought a few more plates for the boatman’s cabin and a crochet mat for one of my plants. Some bargains were to be found. The music has been fabulous this weekend. There really are some talented singers out there.

IMG_0945Last night though was amazing as there was a firework display. The view was incredible as all the fireworks just exploded into the sky in an array of colours. Truly magical.

I provided some entertainment of my own today for the neighbours as I decided to a 180 degree turn in the marina so we could moor the opposite way in the marina. My neighbour Ann came and joined me for the 2 minute trip. Roy stood and watched with the look of fear as I shouted out ” see you in a few weeks”.  Ann’s husband Terry got his camera out as I took the boat out on my own with my supportive crew member Ann.

Perfectly executed I gave a curtsey as the boat came back into her mooring spot. Thank goodness I did it o.k as there was an audience. Ann, Barbara ( my 2 neighbours on the jetty) & myself are going to take Foxglove out for a day. I think Roy is worried sick or actually doesn’t believe I will do it. He will have a shock!! Ha ha.Roy has been busy sorting out the front cratch ropes (decorative ropes) this weekend. Almost done and he has done a fab job. I will take a photo once he has completed it.

Feel a little disorientated on the boat this evening with us being moored the opposite way around but I am hoping it will be far easier getting on and off the boat during rainy weather than trying to mess with unzipping cratch covers and crouching down whilst trying to take your shoes off and a dog trying to push past me. It will be a lot easier at the stern end of the boat.

This weekend has gone far too quickly. Roy is back at work tomorrow and I have no plans  at all. I am just taking each day as it comes. I know that I am feeling 100% better in myself, loving my new-found freedom and independence. I feel have renewed confidence in myself.

Got to head back to Stoke-on-Trent at some point this week. Few things to sort out at the house before our final goodbye and pass the keys over. Hopefully meet up with a few friends and fit in some shopping trips before heading back to Foxglove. Definitely feel a trip to Trentham Gardens has to be fitted in somewhere!!

Already planning a trip away on Foxglove. Where to???? I have no idea. How long for??? Who knows? Just enjoying each day come rain or shine.

Home :-)

This was yesterdays blog, but only managed to upload the photos today. Didn’t want to confuse people as it has rained here for most of the day. Yesterday was totally different 🙂

The boat really feels like home now. The kitchen is finally finished and it has made a total transformation to the feel of the boat. It has a very cosy and warm feeling and really does feel homely.

kitchenIt is 1 week now since I have started living on the boat and I feel more relaxed now than I have done for a long , long time. I have no regrets and no doubts that this is where I want to be. Everything is just simplified. I am enjoying cooking, baking and actually eating properly again because I now have the time for me again.

Enjoyed the sun today and sat out on the front of the boat with my book.
I feel very lucky 🙂

Beautiful sunset tonight. How lovely to see sights like this every evening.

sunsetThe marina are getting ready for their open weekend this Saturday & Sunday. We are really looking forward to sharing it with them as this will be the last the marina will hold.
We also get to view the new Brigantine tomorrow which is a wide beam boat in the style of a dutch barge. It looks beautiful from the outside so I am looking forward to seeing it inside.
Heard the weather is going to change tomorrow……10 degrees cooler and rain apparently. I hope it clears up for the open weekend especially after all the effort the marina have put in. Either way we shall certainly make the most of it.

Through the keyhole

Who lives in a house…..I mean boat like this??

imageThis was my lounge late this afternoon. It has been a great day! The empty bottle of wine and glasses speaks volumes 😉

Had a very relaxing day as it started off with a nice relaxing bubble bath this morning, lovely walk with Wish whilst the sun was still shining , food shopping then a lovely relaxing afternoon with Ann and Birthday girl Barbara. Out came a bottle of wine shared between friends. Lots of laughs and a very chilled afternoon enjoyed by all. Learning to slow down a bit now and enjoying the more peaceful life is doing me the world of good.

Wanting to get up in the mornings is a fantastic feeling as the last few months whilst I was working were very hard as I never wanted to get up and face the day. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted and I have my life back.

Rob the joiner is popping back in the morning to finish off the kitchen by fitting the porthole liners. He has done a great job of the tiling and it will be so nice to have it all finished off tomorrow. I will be getting the camera out for some final photos.

All the major jobs have now been completed on the boat. It is almost a year now since we bought Foxglove. I think I will plan some before and after photos for tomorrows blog.  I still can’t believe how beautiful the boat is now. It really has become a home.

Slowing down

Today is the first day properly on my own. Roy left for work early this morning and it is the first time in a long time I was able to make him breakfast on a work day as it was normally the other way around because I was always in such a rush in the mornings. Not today though, we had a nice leisurely breakfast together and then as soon as Roy went off to work I then made a start on my plans. I have to learn that I am not in a rush to do anything, just take each day as it comes and not to plan anything.

It was lovely to take Wish out this morning for a nice long walk. She has been with me every second of the day. She loves being on the boat and spending time with me and I love it also.

Finally got around to baking those cakes. By lunch time today though I had dusted, hoovered, done 2 lots of washing which is drying nicely in the boatmans cabin, read some of my book whilst the cakes were baking and also taken Wish out. Had a lovely peaceful lunch looking out onto the marina. The morning flew by and this afternoon I have had a nice catch up with my neighbour Ann.

The day has just flown by but I must try slow everything down. No urgency for anything, no deadlines, no routine, no e mails, no phone calls, just peace and quiet. Time for me 🙂
